Americans or US people to indicate the US citizens?

Dear Readers,

just a remark for who is reading and commenting this blog: Please, try to keep in mind that the word "Americans" does not indicate the people living in USA.
America is a continent going from Alaska to Chile and consisting of 35 different and independent countries (although someone in north America does not agree with that).

Therefore, in this blog American can be anyone living in this continent and it does not matter whether he comes from Chile, Venezuela or USA.

You might point me out that there is not any other denomination for people living in USA. Well, this is not our problem. They can invent a name to indicate themselves, and if they do not want, we can ask some citizen of south America to help them!

Furthermore, the use of the word American for people living only in the USA is offensive towards the different nations in central and south America that suffered the USA colonization and domination between the twenties and the end of the last century (see the last two sections of the 2nd part of: Open Veins of Latin America, E. Galeano).
I hope that every one agrees with that!

Pompeii, shame of Italy

On the most popular Italian new papers, at least on the on-line version, the following news has not been adequately reported. Hereafter I post a reportage realized by BBC about the current status of the archaeological area of the old roman city of Pompeii.

Pompeii lies in a state of total abandonment and the news has been finally broadcast all over the world.
But what happens right now so special, in Pompeii?? Nothing! Absolutely nothing!
Pompeii has always been in such ignoble conditions since nothing serious has been proposed along the last 50 years to protect and preserve one of the most important world wide heritage.
Nevertheless, the BBC reportage is worth to be watched, since it, at least, spreads the news out of the Italian borders and makes the entire world aware of it!

I was born in Salerno, a city about 40km south from Pompeii.
Since I was a child, my father and grand father taught me about the beauty of archeology, and since I used to spend my holidays in Salerno, I had the opportunity to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum several times.

The last visit goes back to the summer of 1986. At this point in time I started to notice that there were clear signs of degradation and abandonment. My eyes can still remember that in almost all the Roman houses there were graffiti about everything: from the declaration of love between lovers until the support of some football club. In Pompeii you could really find everything, except protection and preservation of the monument. Since than, in order to avoid feeling sad about Pompeii, I decided not to visit it any more.

Pompeii is something unique, as many other monuments of Italy. And as many other places or heritages of our glorious past, is not preserved and enhanced in order teach our children about our history.

This particular relationship with cultural heritage is very common in Italy. Perhaps we have too many monuments and we do not realize their importance; perhaps we are lazy and we do not want to do anything to protect them; perhaps we are so disorganized and these are the consequences.
No matter what is the cause! What matter is that Italy is not allowed to destroy his history, since it represents one of the most important part of the western history.

To change the current situation is obviously not effortless, in particular referring to the current modern Italian society, where everything counts, except what should really counts.

The national government, the local government, and the people living in that area, instead of acting to modify the current status, instead of working all together to recover the lost time, instead of planning and basing their future on the preservation of a heritage that can also represent a enormous source of incoming, instead of all these possible approaches, their solution is to do nothing!

I thought several time how we could preserve and protect our monuments, and in particular these kind of places. I believe that one possibility to save Pompeii, Herculaneum and the other archaeological areas existing in Italy is to make them profitable for the local inhabitants. If the local economy was based on the archaeological excavations, Pompeii would be preserved forever by the local people, without any help, advice or suggestion from the national government!

To realize it, we must create, around the old roman city, a network capable to welcome and inform the tourist visiting Pompeii at the same level of any other famous place. If we can make that, we will probably dramatically improve the current status!

At the moment, there is almost no organization: The touristic point are something still rare, the information in English are almost always unavailable, and a guided tour in English is just impossible to get.

If the archaeological area of Pompeii does not generate any profit, it makes it something useless to the eyes of the people leaving in the near area. I can bet that I can find someone right now in Pompeii still wondering why instead of preserving this old, useless houses, we do not build some casino or houses for the inhabitants.

Of course, this approach is valid for any other abandoned or degraded monument. A wide use of it would allow to make profitable any place, and more important will let our children to fully enjoy our wonderful cultural heritage.

Welcome to my blog!!

Dear Readers,

welcome to my blog!
To be honest, until some month ago I never thought about the idea to create and maintain a personal blog, but later on, also following the advices of my girlfriend Fang Fang, I understood that it made sense to share my thoughts with everybody somewhere in Internet, instead of leaving them in some email, that surely, will be, one day, lost.

Although my blog starts up with some posts related to political-historical facts, it will deal with everything can be called "knowledge" either scientific or political or historical or social knowledge.
The idea is simple: I would like to provide a small (a very small!) contribute to the spreading of the few things I learnt up to now.
Therefore, here you will find posts about translation of famous or infamous speeches (for example see the one gave by Sen. Robert Kennedy), posts about very curious news (not always easy to watch on the TV channels), tutorial about programming, etc. etc.
In other words, you will find (I hope!) something interesting!

Before I terminate the welcome post, I would like to thank you in advance for all the suggestions, advices, ideas etc. that you will send me! Thanks!

Discorso - L'insensata minaccia della violenza di Robert Kennedy

Questo e' un momento vergognoso e triste. Non e' un momento per la politica.

Mi sono risparmiato questa occasione di parlarvi brevemente a proposito della insensata minaccia di violenza negli USA che ancora macchia il nostro paese e le nostre esistenze.

Non e' solo una questione di razza. Le vittime della violenza sono bianche e nere, ricche e povere, giovani ed anziani, famosi e sconosciuti. Ma piu' importante di tutto, sono esseri umani, che sono amati e necessari per altri esseri umani. Nessuno - non ha importanza dove viva o che cosa faccia - puo' essere certo su chi soffrira' del prossimo insensato spargimento di sangue. E questo andra' purtroppo avanti.

Perche'? Che cosa mai riuscita a realizzare la violenza? Che cosa ha mai creato? Nessuna causa portata avanti da martiri e' mai stata fatta tacere dal colpo di un assassino.

Nessuna cosa sbagliata e' mai stata corretta da rivolte o disordini civili. Un cecchino e' solo un codardo, non un eroe; ed un incontrollabile folla e' solo la voce della pazzia, non la voce della gente.

Ovunque la vita di uno statunitense e' presa non necessariamente da parte di un altro statunitense, anche se e' fatto in nome della legge od in nome della sprezzo alla legge, da un uomo o una banda, a sangue freddo o con passione, in un attacco di violenza o in risposta ad altra violenza,

ogni volta che strappiamo la vita di una persona che con fatica ha lavorato per se stesso e per i suoi figli, l'intera nazione soffre un enorme degrado.

"Solo fra uomini liberi", disse un giorno Abraham Lincoln, “non ci puo' essere nessuna attazione per il voto della pallattola; e quelli che avranno questo tipo di attrazione saranno sicure di perdere la loro causa e di pagare il giusto prezzo".

Adesso tolleriamo apparentemente un crescente livello di violenza che ignora il nostro comune senso di umanita' e le nostre richieste di un qualcosa simile alla civilta'. Accettiamo senza problemi che i giornali riportino un suicidio se lontano dal nostro posto. Esaltiamo film pieni di assassini sugli schermi televisivi e lo chiamiamo intrattenimento. Rendiamo semplice l'acquisto di armi e munizioni a tutte le persone di qualunque livello di sanita' (mentale).

Troppo spesso onoriamo spacconate e millanteria e il violento esercizio della forza; troppo spesso scusiamo chi vuole costruire le proprie vite attraverso la distruzione dei sogni degli altri. Alcuni statunitensi, che predicano la non violenza in terra straniera non la praticano invece qui a casa loro. Alcuni che accusano gli altri di incitare a rivolte, hanno loro stessi invitato a rivoltarsi.

Alcuni cercano solo un capro espiatorio, altri cercano solo cospirazioni, ma questo e' fin troppo chiaro; la violenza genera altra violenza, la repressione porta alla ritorsione, e solo un cambiamento vero della nostra societa' puo' portare a rimuovere (per sempre) questa malattia dalla nostra anima.

Oltre a questo, c'e' un altro tipo di violenza, che agisce si piu' lentamente, ma implacabilmente, distruttivo come uno sparo o una bomba esplosa durante la notte. Questa e' la violenza delle istituzioni; indifferenza e non-azione, che portano ad una lenta decadenza. Questa e' la violenza che affligge i poveri, che avvelena le relazioni fra gli uomini solo per via del differente colore della pelle.

Questa e' una distruzione lenta di un bambino per via della fame, delle scuole senza libri, e delle case senza riscaldamento in inverno. Questo e' l'annientamento dell'anima di un uomo, negandogli la possibilita' di essere padre e uomo in mezzo agli uomini.

Ed anche questo che affligge tutti noi. Non sono venuto qui a proporre un insieme di specifici rimedi e non c'e' un solo insieme di rimedi da attuare. ma noi conosciamo quello che dobbiamo fare per migliorare il nostro futuro.

"Quando insegni ad un uomo ad odiare ed a temere il suo fratello, quando gli insegni che e' meno uomo a causa del proprio colore o credo (religioso) o a causa delle idee che cerca di realizzare, quando insegni che quelli diversi da te rappresentano una minaccia alla tua liberta' od al tuo lavoro od alla tua famiglia, allora si che anche tu comincerai a vedere negli altri, non piu' normali concittadini, ma nemici, da incontrare non al fine di cooperare ma al fine di conquistare, al fine di soggiogarli e dominarli.

Noi impariamo, alla fine, a vedere i nostri fratelli come alieni, uomini con i quali condividiamo una citta', ma non una comunita'. Abbiamo un solo desiderio di scappare l'uno dall'altro, un solo comune impulso a trattare ogni disaccordo con la forza. Per tutte queste cose, non ci sono risposte definitive.

Adesso, sappiamo che cosa dobbiamo fare. Dobbiamo raggiungere la vera giustizia fra i nostri cari concittadini. La domanda ora e' quale programma dobbiamo seguire al fine di attuarla. La domanda e' se possiamo trovare in mezzo a noi e nei nostri cuori la direzione dei propositi della razza umana che riconosceranno le terribili verita' della nostra esistenza.

Dobbiamo ammettere la vanita' delle false distinzioni fra uomini ed imparare a trovare il nostro proprio cammino nella ricerca di un avanzamento generale della societa'. Dobbiamo ammettere che il futuro dei nostri bambini non puo' essere costruito sulle sfortune degli altri. Dobbiamo riconoscere che questa breve vita non puo' essere resa degna od arricchita dalla (generazione) di odio e sete di vendetta. Le nostre vite su questo pianeta sono troppo corte ed il lavoro da fare e' enorme per lasciare che questo stato d'animo fiorisca ancor di piu'. Naturalmente, non possiamo cancellarlo con un programma, neppure con una risoluzione.

Ma possiamo forse ricordare, anche se solo per un momento, che quelli che vivono con noi sono nostri fratelli, che dividono con noi lo stesso breve momento di vita, che cercano, come noi, niente piu' che la possibilita' di vivere secondo certi propositi e in pace, cercando di raggiungere un certo livello di soddisfazione e di realizzazione personale. Certamente questo legame di destino comune, questo legame di un obbiettivo comune, puo' cominciare ad insegnarci qualche cosa. Certamente possiamo imparare, almeno, a vedere le persone che ci circondano come concittadini, e certamente possiamo cominciare a lavorare un po' piu' consistemente per fasciare le nostre ferite per diventare nei nostri cuori: fratelli e connazionali ancora una volta.
